Chemclear Remove Oil Spill Threat To Historic Site

Chemclear emergency response team have successfully removed an oil spill threatening a site of potential historical importance.

Our specialist clean-up team were dispatched after engineers found a defective oil pipe on land being investigated for possible ancient artefacts.

The land, earmarked for a housing development, was being worked on by a team of archaeologists when ground-workers found a pipe had been disturbed.

Mineral oil was then discovered in a water filled excavation and it became crucial to ensure any contamination was contained and removed.

Chemical Clean-Up

Chemclear despatched specialist clean-up operatives to the site in Peterborough to prevent any possibility of contamination.

“It is well known that Peterborough is an area rich in sites of historical importance and so it was crucial to secure the spill and remove it safely as quickly as possible,” explained Chemclear Managing Director Chris Jones.

“We were called after contractors came across an oil pipe had been disturbed which was not marked and there was concern that oil could contaminated the land.

Archeological

“Given the archeological research this was even more important and so we dispatched an emergency response team to secure the spill and begin a clean up immediately.

“The fact that the site potential contained artefacts mean’t that we could not use heavy machinery and instead, needed to create a more delicate solution.

“So, two of our operatives worked by hand to lay a 175 meter pipe with local supplier M Gaze which was then used with a high-powered vacuum to remove the contamination.

“It was a pain staking job and we had to take great care but after a very long day we were able to secure the site, remove the oil safely and leave the site undisturbed, and the archaeologists able to continue their work.”

The Peterborough site will become the location of a new housing development once work is complete.

Chemclear’s work in successfully locating and removing the oil substance allowed the archeology dig to continue and the builders to continue work preparing the ground.
